In 1991, he began his law career at Drew & Napier. Initially, he practiced conveyancing law but switched to litigation, where he worked under Davinder Sing, a Singaporean lawyer and former politician.

From 2013 to 2021, Tan was a member of the Law Society Council. He served as treasurer in 2016 and vice president in 2017. In 2018, he resigned from Stamford Law to work at TSMP Law
On January 1, 2022, Tan was appointed president of the Law Society Council of Singapore and also a partner at TSMP Law Corporation.
As an author, he wrote the novels “The Teenage Textbook” and “The Teenage Workbook” which became bestsellers that sold over 50,000 copies
These two bestselling books, The Teenage Textbook and The Teenage Workbook were written in 1988 and 1989, while he was an undergraduate law student.
Sadly the Law Society president and veteran lawyer has died at 57. Adrian Tan died on Saturday, July 8, 2023, after battling cancer for more than a year.
Tan was diagnosed with cancer in March last year (2022) but went public in July (2022) about his condition in a LinkedIn post.
